Last week, we celebrated the 50th annual Earth Day.
Over the half-century since the first Earth Day, we’ve made real progress in protecting our environment. But, unfortunately -- even amid a global pandemic -- the Trump Administration has not slowed down its attacks on our environmental progress one bit.
Add your name to mine if you’re committed to our fight to protect the environment and to stop the Trump Administration’s attacks.
John, over the last few weeks, while Americans have been focused on overcoming the challenges of this pandemic, the Trump Administration has continued to wage new assaults on the environment:
The Trump Administration finalized its rule weakening fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards. Mobile sources -- the cars, trucks and vans that we drive -- are the nation’s largest source of global warming pollution. This rollback will lead to more air pollution and worse public health.
The Environmental Protection Agency announced it won’t strengthen a regulation on PM pollution -- industrial particle matter emissions that harm our lungs -- despite a new study that shows a connection between exposure to PM pollution and COVID-19-related deaths.
The EPA also decided it is no longer “appropriate and necessary” to set standards for power plants’ mercury emissions despite the grave dangers of mercury to human health and the studies that show the rule prevents 11,000 premature deaths every year and illnesses, including asthma symptoms and acute bronchitis.
I know there is so much going on, and I know that sometimes it’s hard to stay tuned when it feels like the bad news is neverending. But we can’t afford to lose sight of our fight for environmental quality and progress -- especially right now -- because the environment and public health go hand in hand.
A half-century after the first Earth Day, we need to be committed as ever to continuing the progress we’ve made. We have to keep up our fight against the Trump Administration’s seemingly endless assaults on the environment. Will you add your name to mine to show you’re in this fight with me?
Thank you,
Tom
