John,

I recently joined several of my Senate colleagues and took the important step of reintroducing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2024 in the Senate.

I did so while acknowledging on the Senate floor the recent, tragic death of Sonya Massey, a 36 year-old Black woman who was shot and killed in her home in Illinois by a Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy responding to her 911 call for assistance.

The deputy, who had been employed by six different police departments over four years, has since been fired from the sheriff’s department and charged with three counts of first-degree murder, among other charges. But there are systemic issues in policing that must be addressed — like getting departments to use a national police misconduct database before hiring new officers.

Sonya Massey’s death is another stark reminder that the time for comprehensive and common sense policing reform is long overdue. Sonya Massey’s life was cut short due to a system that fails to hold officers accountable for egregious misconduct.

Vice President Kamala Harris and I co-authored the original Justice in Policing Act in the Senate in 2021. Now, she is calling on Congress to pass this legislation. It is everyone’s responsibility to speak up for what is right and move our country forward — add your name as a citizen cosponsor of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act today. [[link removed]]

I have spent the better part of four years working to advance the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and policing reforms that make communities safer.

You deserve transparency and accountability from those sworn to protect and serve you.

You deserve law enforcement that is held accountable for misconduct to ensure these tragedies never happen again.

Reforming qualified immunity, granting the Department of Justice broader oversight of police-involved deaths and their investigations, reporting use of force data to the FBI and police department hiring practices, ending racial and religious profiling, no-knock warrants, and chokeholds, requiring police body cameras, and providing more resources for mental health and social service interventions to respond to crises is necessary to make our nation safer, stronger, and more just.

If you agree that Congress should act to improve public safety and policing, then I am humbly asking you to add your name next to mine as a citizen co-sponsor of our legislation. [[link removed]]

Thank you for raising your voice. Together, we will see this through.
