DSA-LA HOUSING SURVEY
May Day, or International Workers’ Day, has long been a day to demonstrate the strength of the working class. This year it feels even more essential as workers face loss of income from COVID-19 and worry about paying the rent on May 1. But we are inspired by neighbors coming together to take collective action to demand rent cancellation, reduced payments, and more from their landlords in this crisis. This is an important step EVERYONE can take (whether you are able to pay your rent or not) to raise class consciousness and build worker/tenant power at a time when we need it most. Help us get organized and fill out this survey on your housing situation.
As organized socialists, we have a clear role to play in tenant struggles right now. During the Great Depression, the Communist Party organized growing ranks of unemployed workers into Unemployment Councils, putting pressure on the government to provide aid through massive rent strikes. They blocked the evictions of tens of thousands of tenants who could not pay rent, demanding work and home relief.
Today, capitalism is alienating enough as it is — now is the time to connect with your neighbors, build solidarity, and fight for tenant power. Start by filling out this survey and DSA-LA tenant organizers will be in touch if you’re worried about paying your rent or mortgage or want to organize your building! Join us tomorrow, Tuesday, April 28th from 7-8pm for an event where we discuss the next steps that DSA-LA is taking to continue the work of the Bernie Sanders campaign at the local level. You'll hear from the Western Regional Organizer for DSA, a member of DSA's National Political Committee, and one of the leaders of DSA-LA's Bernie Working Group that helped win California.
We'll also have discussion to hear from you about what you think this organization should do to build on its successes. So come hang out with your fellow Berners as we continue the political revolution together! |

Join the DSA-LA Labor Committee to celebrate International Workers’ Day with a Digital May Day Rally
We can't gather in-person to march this year, so we'll be broadcasting workers to Facebook Live. Our digital May Day lineup includes a diverse set of speakers from across the Los Angeles labor movement. We will hear from workers about how they are grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic in their workplaces and the struggle to put the dignity and power of workers over corporate greed.

Week after week, Healthy LA is mobilizing thousands of people across LA City and LA County to take action via calls, emails, and social media which have resulted in the adoption of vital measures to protect tenants, workers and unhoused people during this COVID19 crisis. But there is still more to do to ensure the safety of us all. The LA County Board of Supervisors is meeting TUESDAY, April 28 at 10am, to discuss and vote on more COVID19 relief measures. TAKE ACTION! We need to start EMAILING PUBLIC COMMENT and building SOCIAL MEDIA PRESSURE TODAY! And start making PHONE CALLS on Monday all day and Tuesday morning. We’ve put together this TAKE ACTION TOOLKIT that has everything you need to take action, including CALL SCRIPT, PUBLIC COMMENT EMAIL TEMPLATE, SAMPLE SOCIAL MEDIA POST & GRAPHICS.

On April 17, Representative Ilhan Omar introduced H.R. 6515: the Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act, which would enact a national rent and mortgage suspension because of the coronavirus pandemic. You can read our breakdown of the bill and why we support it here.
