Hi John,
The countdown is on for our annual global conference, #NoWar2024: Resisting the USA's Military Empire, coming up on September 20-22, to celebrate the International Day of Peace! This year's conference is our most ambitious yet, taking place on Zoom + live in 4 cities — Washington, DC, US; Bogotá, Colombia; Sydney, Australia; and Wanfried, Germany.
Have you seen our new #NoWar2024 trailer video? You can watch and share the video on the following platforms to learn more & spread the word about the event:
The #NoWar2024 Conference tackles the often ignored issue of the USA's military base empire — more than 900 military bases in 90 countries worldwide, far exceeding the foreign bases of any other country. These bases have a legacy of injustice and destruction, often forcibly removing Indigenous people from their lands. U.S. military bases are notorious for their use of toxic "forever chemicals" which have poisoned communities at bases both in the U.S. and around the world. Plus, the U.S.'s foreign military base empire costs taxpayers exorbitant amounts of money — estimated at $100-$250 billion a year — money that could be better spent on healthcare, education, renewable energy, and so much more.
Throughout three days of sessions at the #NoWar2024 Conference, you will have a chance to hear from activists from around the world about the impact of military bases in their communities — and how they're rising up. We'll hear incredible stories of nonviolent resistance from communities who have successfully prevented or closed bases in their regions.
Our incredible line-up of speakers includes:
-
Dr. Cynthia Enloe, renowned author of Bananas, Beaches and Bases
-
Myrna Pagán, founder of Vidas Viequenses Valen, who will discuss the successful campaign to close the military base in Vieques, Puerto Rico
-
Alejandra Rodríguez Peña, member of the Olga Castillo Collective, an organization that works for justice and reparations for victims of sexual violence by U.S. military personnel in Colombia
-
Laura Benítez, a marine biologist and activist opposing the construction of a U.S. base on Gorgona Island in Colombia
-
Karina Lester, a Yankunytjatjara Anangu woman from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands (APY Lands) in the far North West of South Australia, who will speak about the impacts of nuclear testing felt by her people
-
Peter Cronau, journalist and author of The Base: Australia’s secret role in America’s global wars
-
Jared Hayes, Environmental Working Group (EWG)’s Senior Policy Analyst, who has extensive experience on PFAS contamination at U.S. military bases
- World BEYOND War’s own Co-Founder and Executive Director David Swanson
- And many more!
This September 20-22, join us virtually – or in-person in Australia, Germany, Colombia, and the U.S. – for the 3-day #NoWar2024 Conference to learn about the impact of the USA’s military base empire and how to resist it.
See you at #NoWar2024 this September 20-22,
