Why are so many classrooms, so many community centers, and so many towns missing resources to uplift one another while police departments use their funds to terrorize communities? Because our taxes are being used to kill us.
Sonya Massey is dead because of the unquestioned privilege of the police in our country. Jack Campbell is the Sheriff of Sangamon County. He chose to knowingly hire and make Deputy Sean Grayson, an emotionally unstable, reckless, trigger-happy reject who had no business carrying a badge.
Who is (former) Deputy Sheriff Sean Grayson? A man with a detailed record of incompetence. Despite that, he was handed the gun and badge he used to murder Sonya Massey.
Sean Grayson:
Was charged with two DUIs in one year
Was kicked out of the U.S. Army in 2016 for serious misconduct
Was fired or dismissed from SIX Illinois law enforcement agencies in just four years
Admitted he had no real experience in policing
Was caught lying in police reports
Was forced to take additional training in traffic stops, report writing, and decision-making under pressure from a previous department
Scored embarrassingly low on a cognitive test by the very department that hired him
Sean Grayson isn’t Sonya's only killer — he never would have been given the chance without being allowed to fail forward. Jack Campbell is a murderer because he hired the clearly ill-equipped disaster in uniform named Sean Grayson.
That’s why in solidarity with Sonya Massey’s family, we joined the call for his resignation.
The power of our collective voice demanding justice worked, John. Due to overwhelming public pressure, Jack Campbell stepped down.
None of this will bring back Sonya Massey. But what we can do is everything we can to prevent this from happening again. Jack Campbell, Sean Grayson, and the entire Springfield police department know our eyes are on them and that they won’t be allowed to get away with their crimes.
