Message from Congressman Scott Fitzgerald

Good afternoon! I hope everyone had a great weekend and is enjoying the last month of the summer.

Before the school year kicks off, I want to highlight that my office will be participating in the Congressional App Challenge (CAC), a competition designed to encourage student participation in computer science and coding. The CAC is open to all middle school and high school students who reside in or attend a school in Wisconsin’s Fifth District.

This competition allows students to hone their skills and develop a software application for web, PC, tablet, mobile, or other platform of their choice. A panel of judges from Wisconsin’s Fifth District will select the winning entry, and the winning app will be eligible to be featured on a display, on the ‘House.gov’ website, and on the Congressional App Challenge website. Applications are due October 24, visit my website to find more details.

Last week marked National Purple Heart Day—an important reminder that our freedom is not free. National Purple Heart Day recognizes our brave men and women in uniform who have been wounded or who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. According to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, it’s estimated that as many as 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded. The Purple Heart symbolizes the courage and sacrifice of these true heroes, and we owe them a debt of gratitude. So in honor of this day, and every day, I give my thanks to these men & women.

Lastly, I want to touch on a ruling that was handed down last week by a judge in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Judge Amit Mehta ruled that Google has been illegally monopolizing the internet. I bring this case up—which was started by the Trump Administration in 2020—to point out that it is wholly unnecessary to change our rule of law approach to antitrust in ways that risk free speech. We can still hold Big Tech accountable with the rules we have set in place now. I hope FTC Commissioner Lina Khan takes note of this ruling and rethinks her misguided strategy of rewriting antitrust rules.

Thanks for reading this week’s eNewsletter.

 Have a great week!

Scott
