Friends,
On Tuesday, District Precinct Chairs will select the Democratic nominee for the 18th U.S. Congressional District in Texas. This nominee will replace the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee on the November ballot and will serve a two-year term if elected.
The Candidates, along with their biographies/CVs and questionnaires, can be found here.
More than 44% of residents in CD 18 are Latino. That is the largest demographic of any ethnicity in the district, yet there is only one Hispanic candidate on the ballot.
Texas Rep. Christina Morales, a candidate LTP has endorsed before, was selected by the Precinct Chairs as one of the top seven candidates for participation in a candidate forum hosted by the Southeast Democrats Network and the Black Women of Greater Houston PAC yesterday. Watch the forum here.
Our participation is vitally important as this unprecedented process unfolds before the November election. Yet Latinos were noticeably absent from the forum and our interests were not represented well in the questions presented to candidates. This must change.
The late Congresswoman tirelessly championed the rights and representation of all minorities, including those of Latinos. It is imperative that her successor builds upon this legacy, especially as the Latino demographic grows in influence and power.
Please attend this election meeting, which is open to the public, in solidarity on Tuesday, August 13th at 6 p.m. at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, 3826 Wheeler Avenue, Houston, TX 77004. As a community, we must convey that “latinos están presentes.” We cannot be overlooked and whoever Precinct Chairs elect, our representative must work with the Latino community.
If you are a resident of CD 18, Precinct Chairs have asked to hear from you before they vote! We encourage you to reach out and let them know who you want to be the Democratic Nominee. Their contact information can be found here.
Let us know how you plan on making your voice heard by replying to this email. Please lean in with us and help us elevate our voice. If you want to become more involved, join us later this month for our re-launch event.
In Solidarity,
The Latino Texas PAC
