In 1954, the Salk polio vaccine underwent the largest and most expensive medical experiment in history, costing over 5 million dollars. The vaccine trial proved its safety and effectiveness, despite controversy over the use of a saline placebo. The vaccine was found to be safe and effective, with minimal reactions and few deaths.
