John,
Governor Tim Walz's progressive tax policies are making a real difference for working families.
Under Walz's governorship, Minnesota has become a model for tax fairness. The bottom 60% of Minnesota households saw their effective state & local tax rate drop from 9.5% in 2018 to 8.9% in 2023. Meanwhile, the top 1% of households now pay more, with their rate increasing from 10.1% to 10.5% in the same period.[1]
But that's not all. Walz dramatically expanded Minnesota's Child and Working Family tax credit. Now, a married couple with two children can receive up to $3,869 ―and it's fully refundable.[2] This means real money in the pockets of those who need it most.
In Congress, Walz's record was equally impressive. He voted against the Trump-GOP tax cuts favoring the rich in 2017, stood firm against Republican attempts to eliminate the estate tax, and co-sponsored crucial legislation like the No Tax Breaks for Outsourcing Act.

Walz's commitment to tax fairness extends to ensuring corporate accountability too. In 2023, Minnesota enacted a state-level Global Intangible Low Taxed Income (GILTI) provision, closing big corporate tax loopholes and raising significant revenue. He came close to passing an even more comprehensive reform that would have shielded the state from offshore corporate tax dodging.
But Walz didn't stop there. He raised taxes on profitable corporations to help fund universal free meals in public schools, to make sure students are well-fed and ready to learn.[3]
As a Congressman, Walz introduced the Middle Class Tax Fairness Act, which would have raised revenue to pay for a larger standard deduction for working families. He also co-sponsored the Social Security 2100 Act to expand Social Security, paid for by making the wealthy pay more of their fair share; and legislation to expand the refundability of the Child Tax Credit.
These aren't just policy wins―they're life-changing reforms for millions of families. But too few Americans know about this progressive tax champion. That's where you come in.

John,
As the American people are introduced to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, they're learning about his biography as a social-studies teacher, football coach, and Army National Guard veteran. But there's another important part to his story: Tim Walz has a sterling record of fighting for tax fairness and standing up for working families, a fact that deserves to be front and center in his national introduction.
From his time in Congress to his current role as Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz has consistently championed progressive tax policies that invest in working families and make corporations pay their fair share.
In Congress, he voted against the Trump-GOP tax scam, fought to close the carried-interest loophole, and introduced legislation to raise revenue from the wealthy to fund a larger standard deduction for working families.
As Governor, Walz has overseen a dramatic expansion of Minnesota's Child and Working Family tax credit [1], making the state's tax code one of the most progressive in the nation. Under his leadership, the bottom 60% of Minnesota households saw their effective state & local tax rate decrease, while the top 1% saw theirs increase.[2]
Governor Walz's work isn't done. We need your help to spread the word about his progressive tax record and its positive impact on working families.

In 2023, Governor Walz worked hard to pass a major corporate tax reform that would have effectively insulated state revenue from the corrosive effect of offshore corporate tax dodging. While that didn't quite make it over the finish line, he did close other big corporate tax loopholes and raise significant revenue.
Governor Walz also delivered rebate checks of up to $1,300 to seniors, students, and workers, providing direct relief to those who need it most.
And in a move that demonstrates true progressive values, he raised taxes on profitable corporations and high-earners’ investment returns, helping to fund universal free meals in Minnesota public schools.[3]
Walz's commitment to working families doesn't stop there. In a groundbreaking move, Minnesota enacted a new payroll tax designed to fund paid leave for workers. This innovative program provides crucial support for those who need to care for a new child, tend to a seriously ill family member, or address their own health concerns.
Governor Walz’s career is a clear demonstration of how smart tax policy can directly improve the lives of working people.
But there's still more work to do and we need your support to keep pushing for tax fairness across the country. Will you chip in today to help us bring Tim Walz's story of tax justice to people nationwide?
