The United States was once the world leader in steel manufacturing. Western Pennsylvania produced more steel than Japan and Germany combined during World War II, providing Americans and their allies with the necessary resources to win.

But for over 40 years, failed economic policies drove manufacturing overseas and devastated communities like Lordstown, Ohio, and Johnstown, Pennsylvania that relied on steel mills to survive. We went from being the world’s largest exporter to the world’s largest importer of steel.

It doesn’t have to be this way. We can restore these communities by making steel in the United States again. And we can do it better and cleaner than China.

I’m working across the aisle with my colleagues in Congress to introduce the Steel Modernization Act, uniting the federal government with steel companies and unions to bring cleaner, better steel manufacturing back to US soil. This bill would:

✅ Establish 3-5 modern steel factories in communities with history and expertise in steel production;

✅ Concentrate on modern, clean steel production, using recycled materials and cleaner energy sources;

✅ Require any new construction and upgrades to use steel manufactured in the U.S.; and

✅ Create thousands of good-paying union jobs.

Tell Congress: Invest in reestablishing the United States as a global leader in steel manufacturing.

The future of steel is here in America, and I won’t rest until the Steel Modernization Act is signed into law.
