President Trump Today! [link removed]   DearJohn,  President Trump is once again pushing a permanent payroll tax cut [link removed] that would damage Social Security by depriving the program of employee and employer contributions. This time, he's using the coronavirus pandemic as a reason to push this harmful proposal, saying, "I would love to see a payroll tax cut ... There are many people who would like to see it as a permanent tax cut ... both for business and the people." He later doubled down in an interview with Sean Hannity, saying a payroll tax cut would be "fabulous."
While it may provide a few extra dollars for workers in the short-term, cutting or eliminating the payroll tax would rob Social Security of much-needed revenue for the future at a time when millions of older Americans rely solely on their earned benefits just to make ends meet. What's worse, tampering with this program could open the door to devastating benefit cuts and dangerous privatization schemes that would harm the earned-right nature of Social Security.
<strong>We simply cannot afford to sit back and hope this proposal doesn&#39;t gain any traction in Washington.</strong> That&#39;s why I need you to <a alt="Click Here to Sign Our Petition" href="[link removed]" name="trump_ss_financing" style="text-decoration: underline; color: #004D96; text-align: left;" title="Click Here to Sign Our Petition" ><strong><u>sign our Urgent Petition to President Trump today</u></strong></a> &mdash; and <em><strong>SAY NO TO A DANGEROUS PAYROLL TAX CUT!</strong> This is an election year, so the President is paying extra close attention to what constituents like you have to say!</em>
For a president who promises "not to touch" Social Security, repeatedly advocating payroll tax cuts is a bizarre way of showing it. Social Security depends on workers' and employers' payroll tax contributions for funding. (Social Security is completely funded by payroll taxes.) It's no secret that this program faces financial challenges. The Social Security trust fund will be exhausted in 2035 — if Congress takes no action to increase revenues. And that's why NOW is the worst possible time to tamper with the flow of revenue into Social Security!

Today, more than 40% of seniors rely on Social Security for all or most of their income and economic forecasts tell us that tomorrow's retirees will rely on their earned benefits even more than today's seniors do. So please sign our Urgent Petition to President Trump [link removed] and tell him that instead of supporting proposals that weaken Social Security, he should support legislation that will boost earned benefits. With the future of Social Security hanging in the balance, please speak out now!
          Sincerely, Max Richtman
