### **JD Vance Accuses Gov. Tim Walz of Avoiding Iraq Deployment and Exaggerating Military Record**

In a fiery exchange that has ignited the political landscape, Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance of Ohio has leveled serious accusations against his Democratic counterpart, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Speaking in Shelby Township, Michigan, Vance charged that Walz retired from the Army National Guard to sidestep deployment to Iraq, a move he described as abandoning his unit. “You abandoned your unit right before they went to Iraq,” Vance asserted, casting a shadow over Walz's military service.

The allegations, rooted in a 2018 social media post and a paid editorial by two retired command sergeant majors from the Minnesota National Guard, suggest that Walz's retirement was conveniently timed, just months before his unit was deployed. This claim, however, is contested by Joseph Eustice, a former battalion leader under Walz, who defended the governor's record. “He was as good a soldier as you’d find, and to have two former sergeant majors say that he wasn’t, it’s just not true,” Eustice stated, offering a personal testament to Walz's character and service.

The controversy extends to Walz's statements about his military experience, particularly his recent remarks on gun control. In a campaign video, Walz mentioned, “We can make sure those weapons of war, that I carried in war, are only carried in war.” Vance seized on these comments, accusing Walz of stolen valor for implying combat experience he did not have. “I’d be ashamed if I was him and I lied about my military service like he did,” Vance commented, intensifying the scrutiny on Walz's record.
