Recruiting 100,000 volunteers is tough, Jack. We should know. That's what Daily Kos did in 2020—and it's what we're working to do again this year. It's tougher this time, though.
As I said in my last email, Daily Kos has been hit with a double whammy. First, ad revenue is down, in no small part because Big Tech companies like Amazon, Facebook and Google have taken over the online ad market. Secondly, grassroots donations have slipped, a problem that's plagued Democratic candidates and progressive groups alike over the past year. That last point has changed since Kamala Harris took over the top of the ticket, but now we have to make up for lost time. So, I'm asking you again:
Please, Jack, donate $5 right now to help offset the cost of Daily Kos' GOTV campaign if you haven't already. We can't recruit 100,000 GOTV volunteers without your support.
| Thank you, Michael Langenmayr, Daily Kos | Jack, Daily Kos doesn't have a billionaire backer, like some right-wing outlets, and we don't have big corporate sponsors. We like it that way because it keeps us accountable to you, our readers. It can be challenging at times, though. When we're working to recruit 100,000 volunteers to Get Out The Vote, for example.
Getting Out The Vote has real costs for us, like staff time and tech expenses. It also represents an opportunity loss because we could be spending this time doing other things. We're investing in GOTV anyway because this election is too important to sit on the sidelines. It's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work.
This campaign comes at a tough time. Ad revenue, long the lifeblood of the news business, has fallen sharply—not just for Daily Kos, but for news outlets big and small. Big Tech companies have gobbled up what remains. At the same time, progressive groups have seen grassroots fundraising slip. For Daily Kos, which sits at the intersection of news and activism, this is a double whammy. That's why I'm asking you:
Jack, our ability to Get Out The Vote literally depends on your support. Can you please donate $5 right now to help offset the cost of Daily Kos' GOTV campaign and help us recruit 100,000 volunteers this fall?
