One thing is clear right now: If we don't first and foremost protect the lives of Americans, there won't be an economy left to reopen.

I released a plan last month that would have ramped up manufacturing of protective equipment and testing. And just last weekend I sent the president a letter laying out a plan to reopen the economy responsibly. Right now, we need 1,500 grassroots supporters to sign on as citizen co-sponsors of the letter. Will you add your name?

I know Americans everywhere want to get back to work. Students and teachers want to go back to school. Everyone wants to go to the grocery store or the pharmacy without being fearful.

But if we act without regard for the threats the coronavirus poses, we'll have to close the economy again. That will only exacerbate the crisis.

My plan -- which incorporates input and expertise from public health officials -- would:

Increase COVID-19 testing capacity by scaling up manufacturing for testing kits, personal protective equipment, and other critical supplies

Employ robust contact tracing with a qualified team of contact tracers to follow up with all positive cases of COVID-19

Support effective isolation and quarantine practices and ensure everyone has the resources they need to take care of themselves and their neighbors

Create strong safety protections for workers by requiring employers to institute plans to protect workers -- whether they punch a clock or swipe a badge, earn a salary or make tips -- because no one should fear for their life while on the job

Trump already mishandled our country's response to this health crisis by downplaying its seriousness. We can't afford for him to do it again for his own politically expedient self-interest.

I've called on the Trump Administration to support my plan to safely reopen the economy while protecting the people who make it work in the first place.
