John,
Behind closed doors, weapons contractors and AI companies are working together to build fully autonomous weapons that can select and fire upon targets without any human control.
We’re seeing the devastating impact that AI systems can have in Gaza, where the extensive damage to civilians and most buildings is connected to multiple AI-based systems such as “Habsora,” “Lavender,” and “Where’s Daddy?” to target and kill entire Palestinian families and neighborhoods at record speeds.1
Humans still operate these systems, but the scale of destruction is unprecedented, with one former Israeli official saying these tools enable a “mass assassination factory.”
In response to a report about the Israeli military’s AI weapons systems, UN Secretary General António Guterres said: “No part of life and death decisions which impact entire families should be delegated to the cold calculation of algorithms.”
In addition to a permanent ceasefire and an arms embargo, anti-war activists are urging President Biden to ban these AI weapons systems.
Add your name to tell President Biden to support a global ban on autonomous weapons systems immediately.
Last year, Microsoft pitched the idea to the Pentagon of using Microsoft’s OpenAI tool DALL-E in military operations.2 And earlier this year the U.S. Air Force convened branches of the military and countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Japan to learn about its use of technology that “delivers lethality at the speed of data.”3
Right now, corporations such as Lockheed, Google, Microsoft, and others are spending billions of dollars to make AI integral to weapons systems and war. We must take action before it is too late and this scale of mass destruction spreads even further. We need strict regulations in prohibiting autonomous weapons and develop steep penalties for companies, individuals, or nations that cross this red line.
Please sign on to urge President Biden to support a global ban on autonomous weapons systems immediately.
Thank you for taking action, demanding the U.S. government act to value all life rather than perpetuate mass death.
Always serving you,
Rashida
