Did you know the Gulf of Mexico has a “dead zone” for 6,705 square miles where there is not enough oxygen to support fish and other marine life?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this area has grown 1,000 square miles larger than it was expected to this year. It’s the 12th largest dead zone ever recorded and right off the border of the United States.
This “dead zone” is caused by fertilizer runoff and other nutrients that are being carried downstream by the Mississippi River.
Every summer, the fertilizer stimulates the growth of algae that then depletes the oxygen levels in the water and eventually makes the Gulf of Mexico unsuitable for marine life. Plants and animals that can’t escape are killed, while other shrimp and fish try to swim away.
Both federal and state officials have been striving to reduce this runoff, but it hasn’t been enough. The “dead zone” has grown beyond what experts thought would happen and could get even bigger if we don’t take action.
