As people do their part to stay home and flatten the curve, the coronavirus pandemic has led to a historic drop in demand for oil -- and with it, lower fuel prices.

That’s a good thing at a time when so many of us need our dollars to stretch as far as possible.

It means our frontline workers don’t have to spend as much filling up their tanks to get to work. It means grocery stores can spend a little less to keep their refrigerators cold. It means ordering delivery from your favorite local restaurant can be a bit more cost effective.

But oil and gas industry giants are now trying to use their insider connections to get assistance from Donald Trump and the Republicans they keep in their pockets.

The oil exploration and production “E&P” firms seeking a handout have propped themselves up for years using risky financial strategies.

Remember, the oil and gas industry already receives over $600 billion in subsidies every year -- that’s more federal aid than what was sent to small businesses, individuals and unemployment insurance in the latest coronavirus relief package.

A bailout for oil and gas is a loss for clean energy in the future and for American consumers now. Will you add your name to say no to a federal bailout for the oil and gas industry?

The clean energy transition will happen. We can play an active role in accelerating that transition to the benefit of our economy and our planet -- or we can allow Big Oil’s stranglehold on the GOP to keep us trapped in the past.
