Earlier this year, OSHA proposed a new safety and health standard to replace the current Fire Brigades Standard, introducing 22 additional regulations for all fire departments. These proposed changes include mandatory facility upgrades and heightened training requirements. The unyielding nature of these rules would extend to volunteer fire departments in New York, imposing significant financial and operational strains on these essential services.
I have met with with volunteer fire departments across New York's 24th District, including Niagara County, Seneca County, Oswego County, and Jefferson County, to address the impact of these proposed regulations which threaten the closure of many volunteer fire departments in NY-24. These closures would leave our communities vulnerable, slowing response time for emergency services and increasing the risk to lives and property. Thank you to all the local volunteer firefighters in our community who joined us to advocate against these regulations. I remain committed to ensuring our first responders have the resources they need to keep us safe.
