Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Monday, Aug. 12 is International Youth Day. All young people should live in safety and peace. They should have enough food, shelter, education, and the resources they need to thrive. But around the world, many youth are deprived of these basic needs by war, poverty, and other forms of violence and oppression. That includes hundreds of thousands of young people in Gaza.
AFSC has recently published dozens of interviews with people in Gaza who have been repeatedly displaced, including children as young as 12 years old. Learn more about what they’ve been through, the challenges they face, and the future they hope for. [link removed]
TAKE ACTION
Act now for welcoming, dignified, and just immigration [link removed]
This election season, it’s critical that we speak out for immigrant rights—and against fear and divisive hate. Tell Congress we need immigration policies that allow people to come to the U.S., build new lives, and be part of our communities.
COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS
A win-win for preschoolers and farmers [link removed]
For nearly a decade, AFSC has helped local farmers supply fresh vegetables to preschool children in New Mexico. Partnering with Head Start, we introduce fresh vegetables to low-income children in preschools around the state. Creative campaigns like "Great Carrot Crunch" have inspired kids to try new foods. Meanwhile, local farmers have benefited from having a new market for their fresh produce. (Public News Service)
