This week, the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Maryland’s ban on assault weapons. This is a victory for gun violence prevention in Maryland and reaffirms what we all know: There is NO need for civilians to have access to weapons of war. Assault weapons were originally designed for military use. They are uniquely lethal, especially when coupled with large-capacity magazines, which allow numerous bullets to be fired without the need to reload.
Assault weapons have been used across the country to devastate communities and inflict maximum pain and trauma. From the tragic shooting that killed 20 students and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School to the massacres in Buffalo, NY, and Uvalde, TX, that killed 31 people a decade later, easy access to these uniquely lethal weapons has proven a tragically consistent factor in mass shootings. Assault weapons and large-capacity magazines are weapons of war and are designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible. Period. Brady fought hard for this life-saving victory. We filed an amicus brief in this case alongside other gun violence prevention organizations, and made clear arguments as to why the assault weapons ban should continue to stand. And today, we are celebrating the fact that the court system did not enable the gun industry’s deadly agenda in Maryland. But we’re not stopping here.
While Brady will keep fighting in courts and communities to save lives, we have a message for our FEDERAL lawmakers: We need a NATIONAL ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines — and you can help us. Will you please email your members of Congress and urge them to support legislation to ban these weapons of war? The gun industry and its allies in Congress will do everything in their power to stop our progress, so please take action NOW!

Celebrating Six Years of Brady’s End Family Fire Program |
Thursday marked six years since Brady launched End Family Fire, our groundbreaking safe firearm storage program. We created End Family Fire to address incidents of family fire, which includes unintentional shootings, firearm suicide, and firearm misuse. Family fire refers to a shooting that results from someone misusing an unsecured firearm from the home.
Our program takes a non-partisan approach to work with gun owners and non-gun owners alike, helping reduce forms of family fire by promoting the life-saving role of safe firearm storage — meaning storing firearms locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition.
Six years ago, our program focused solely on unintentional shootings among youth, as every day, eight kids are unintentionally injured or killed by family fire in America. Since then, we’ve expanded our efforts to tackle firearm misuse and the deadliest form of gun violence: firearm suicide.
Most recently, we launched “Take the Next Step,” aimed at urging gun owners to store their firearms safely, which is the first-ever national public education campaign on safe firearm storage for Hispanic gun owners — the fastest-growing population of gun owners in the U.S. And we know that our End Family Fire program is saving lives: Gun owners who see the ads are 4x more likely to seek information on safe storage versus gun owners who did not see the ads.
As we mark the sixth anniversary of End Family Fire, will you join us in raising awareness about the importance of safe firearm storage? By simply sharing our PSAs and resources, you have the power to save lives.

This is One of the Strongest Gun Violence Prevention Tickets in Our Nation’s History |
Exciting news: This week, Vice President Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.
Gov. Walz is a prime example of what it means to put people ahead of profits. A gun owner and veteran, Gov. Walz once received an "A" rating from the NRA, but after the devastating Sandy Hook shooting, he felt a growing “deep unease” with the NRA and the group’s growing extremism. After the 2018 Parkland shooting, he became more vocal about gun violence prevention, stating that ‘gun safety isn’t a threat to the Second Amendment — it’s about keeping our kids safe.’
He now sleeps easy knowing he has been drastically downgraded to an “F” rating from the NRA.
His record on gun violence prevention speaks for itself: As governor, he signed a historic gun safety package into law that expanded background checks, created extreme risk protection orders, established harsher penalties for straw purchasers who arm prohibited purchasers, invested $70 million in community violence intervention, and more.
The addition of Gov. Walz alongside Vice President Kamala Harris has created one of the strongest gun violence prevention tickets in history. The Brady Campaign is proud to endorse both Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz as they will free America from gun violence.
Please join us in celebrating Gov. Walz on X (formally known as Twitter)! |

We Need YOUR Votes to Go to South by Southwest (SXSW)! |
SXSW is an annual conference and festival that celebrates tech, film, music, education, and culture. Each year, panelists are selected to speak at the conference, and Brady is in the running to be one of those panelists.
Our proposed panel focuses on why media representation matters, and how representation can change policy, culture, and public opinion. Experts of our Show Gun Safety campaign, which focuses on changing the culture surrounding firearms, will be joined on the panel by the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ youth, and the Truth Initiative, an organization focused on the impacts of smoking. The panel will be moderated by the Hollywood Health and Society.
