August 2024

Dear John

The government has started a consultation on changes to the National Planning
Policy Framework (NPPF).

The NPPF acts as the rulebook for planning in England, and plays a key role in
guiding what gets built where, as well as how the countryside will look and feel
in the future.

We're working with local CPRE groups to prepare a response to the consultation -
but we want to hear your views too. Scroll down to find out how you can get
involved.

In other news, we're pleased to announce a new project on sustainable farming,
alongside a new report on how our planning system can better support clean
energy, and we've got exciting news on the next phase of our Hedgerow Heroes
project. You can find out more about all of this below.

GOVERNMENT STARTS CONSULTATION ON CHANGES TO THE PLANNING SYSTEM
We initially welcomed the commitment to a brownfield-first policy for new
development in the NPPF, however in our response we will be pushing for
brownfield and affordable housing targets, rooftop solar and much clearer and
better definitions of 'affordable housing' and so-called 'grey belt'. The next
government should recognise the value and potential of our Green Belt, and not
put it at risk of degradation. Our full response will be available to download
in September.

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD IN OUR NPPF CONSULTATION RESPONSE
We'll be working with our network of local CPREs in writing our response to the
consultation - but as a CPRE supporter, we want to hear your views too. We've
prepared a survey which gives you the opportunity to share your thoughts with us
without having to respond to every question in the consultation. We aim to
include as many viewpoints as possible in our response.

THE FUTURE OF FARMING: THE NEED FOR JOINED-UP SUPPORT
Farming faces enormous challenges and needs to change if it is to have a
sustainable future. With the right support and incentives, and a land use
framework, we can produce the food we need long-term, on nature-friendly and
climate-resilient farms. We're launching a series of briefings this year which
explores more. In the meantime, find out more in our intro blog on the Wildlife
and Countryside Link website.

JOINED-UP PLANNING SYSTEM NEEDED FOR NET ZERO SUCCESS
We've published interim findings from our energy report with Aldersgate Group
and Renewable UK. The report shows that the planning system for energy
infrastructure needs a more strategic approach, with more resourcing and better
engagement with communities to deliver net zero while protecting landscapes and
nature.

BECOME A MEMBER AND DISCOVER THE BEST OF THE COUNTRYSIDE
Did you know that CPRE members can receive discounts at attractions, houses and
gardens around the country? It's the perfect time to visit the Heights of Abraham
[[link removed]] , which is a short walk from Matlock Bath railway station. I went a couple of
years ago and really enjoyed the Heights and walking in the surrounding
landscape. Take a cable car flight to the 60-acre hilltop park and experience a
day full of history and adventure. By joining CPRE, you'll be able to enjoy
places like this at a discount, while helping us protect the countryside now,
and for future generations.
