MEDIA ADVISORY AND PUBLIC NOTICE

Congressman Al Green Hosts the Historic Prince Hall Slavery Remembrance Day Program and Legislative Update in the U.S. Capitol Visitor’s Center Auditorium

(Washington, D.C.) — On Saturday, August 10, 2024, Congressman Al Green will host an historic National Prince Hall Slavery Remembrance Day Program and Legislative Update. This annual event will help ensure the evils of slavery are never forgotten and thus never repeated. Congressman Green, in partnership with the Conference of Grand Masters Prince Hall Masons, Inc., and the United Supreme Councils, Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Southern and Northern Jurisdictions Prince Hall Affiliation (PHA), will sign a proclamation to honor the memory of those who suffered under slavery. The proclamation will also codify a pledge to educate future generations about the horrors of slavery, as well as promote social justice and equality. The event will take place in the U.S. Capitol Visitor’s Center Auditorium located at First Street and East Capitol Street, Washington, D.C., 20510 at 11:00 a.m. ET. The event has limited public seating for persons who may appear without a reservation.

The theme of this year’s event is “We are the Dream and Hope of the Enslaved.” The event will spotlight key legislative initiatives, including the legislation creating Slavery Remembrance Day. Congressman Green will highlight efforts to secure a Congressional Gold Medal collectively for those who were enslaved. In so doing, they will be properly recognized for their immense contributions as the economic foundational mothers and fathers of America’s greatness. The event will also recognize the significant contributions of Prince Hall, including establishing the first African Freemason lodge in America and petitioning the Massachusetts government for the abolition of slavery, as well as the slave trade. Congressman Al Green stated, “I am beyond grateful to the Conference of Grand Masters Prince Hall Masons, Inc. and the United Supreme Councils, Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Southern and Northern Jurisdictions Prince Hall Affiliation (PHA), for our collaboration in honoring Slavery Remembrance Day. The influential role of Prince Hall Masonry in the abolition of slavery must be recognized. In our contemporary society, the noble men of Prince Hall Freemasonry seek to highlight the importance of recognizing and rectifying past wrongs as integral to achieving liberty and justice for all."
