Demand EPA follow the law

It’s a known cancer-causing chemical that is also toxic to our immune system and kidneys.

Even very low exposures to it are linked to fetal heart defects that can have life-long health consequences.

And the Trump administration’s latest risk evaluation of this chemical cuts multiple corners and violates the law.

Tomorrow is the last day to speak out and demand EPA follow the law. Take action before it’s too late.

Here are the details:

Trichloroethylene – or TCE – is a chemical used in adhesives, spot removers, and other common household products. It frequently contaminates soil and ground water at hundreds of Superfund sites and is commonly detected in our air.

Based on an extensive risk assessment, EPA proposed to ban certain high-risk uses of TCE over three years ago. But the Trump administration has chosen to abandon those bans, instead deciding to start over and reevaluate these uses – delaying action for years.

And in its current draft risk evaluation of the chemical, EPA has dramatically underestimated TCE’s risk. The agency has ignored over 3 million pounds of TCE annually released into our air, water, and land and excludes fetal heart defects from all of its determinations of TCE’s health risks.

Ignoring the very real ways that the American public is put at risk from TCE exposure isn’t just dangerous. It’s illegal.

And in the midst of a public health emergency, EPA has not extended the comment period in order to give overwhelmed public health professionals a chance to weigh in.

The deadline for comments relating to this dangerous assessment is coming up tomorrow.

Take action today – before it’s too late – and demand EPA act to protect American lives from this known danger.
