I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit more about myself, and why my authentic self is at the heart of everything I do.

When I came out in college, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in public service. But I struggled with a serious choice: following the field of my dreams or living my authentic life openly.

I saw others in the LGBTQ+ community demonstrate acts of courage by coming out, celebrating who they are, and being proud about who they love. That’s when I came to realize that my strength lies in being honest about who I am, which only further fueled my passion for public service.

So thanks to the support of this remarkable team, I was elected as the first openly gay Senator in our Nation’s history.

But I didn’t run for office to make history — I ran to make a difference.

I knew that I needed to use this extraordinary opportunity to make a difference in people's lives. Folks like you supported me because you wanted to make a difference, too. And although we’ve made incredible progress, we’re at risk of losing it all.

Republican-led state legislatures across the country continue to pass harmful legislation, targeting the transgender community and LGBTQ+ youth. My right-wing opponent threatens to advance an extreme and dangerous agenda on a national level. And he’d be backed by a majority that has made anti-LGBTQ+ policies the hallmark of their platform if Republicans succeed in taking back control of the Senate.

It’s going to take all of us to counter these hateful attacks. That’s why I’m asking you today for your support — so I can continue making a difference in the lives of the folks I represent and fight back against harmful policies that do nothing but divide us.
