John,

59 years ago this week, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law. This landmark legislation outlawed many discriminatory voting practices, such as literacy tests and poll taxes, which were used primarily in southern states to disenfranchise voters of color after the Civil War.

But in 2013, the Supreme Court gutted crucial provisions in the Voting Rights Act. Since then, Republican lawmakers across the country have been working nonstop to make it harder for Americans—especially Black and brown Americans—to vote.

During my time in Congress, I stood up for voting rights. I fought to ensure every American could participate in our democratic process. I was proud to co-author the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect our right to vote—legislation passed by the House when we had a Democratic majority.

I know there’s still more work to be done to protect the right to vote for every American. I’m ready to go back to Congress to continue that fight, but I need your help. Chip in now to help me flip NY-17 and the House blue so we can protect access to the ballot box.

Today’s Republican Party has completely abandoned democracy. They’re siding with a former President who was convicted of 34 felonies and who incited a deadly insurrection in an attempt to toss out the votes of Black and brown voters in places like Georgia, Arizona, and Pennsylvania.

Their attacks haven’t slowed down. My opponent and his party continue to implement restrictions on voting rights across the country. Just this year, Mike Lawler voted to prevent citizens from registering to vote using their driver’s license. He has shown time and time again that he is willing to disenfranchise Americans in service of pushing MAGA conspiracy theories.

When I return to Congress, I will stop at nothing to protect our democracy. To secure every American’s right to vote, we need to retake the House and pass meaningful voting rights protections. But we can’t achieve this without flipping NY-17.

We need to give the Harris White House a Democratic Majority that can advance the agenda of working families. But we can't do it without defeating Mike Lawler and flipping this seat. Chip in now to help me turn NY-17 blue so we can retake the House majority.
