Any 3rd party shenanigans can't be written off, regardless of the candidate. The Electoral College has been formed around a two-party system and isn't equipped to handle the impacts of so many candidates. Why do we keep raising the alarm about 3rd party candidates for President? Because the Electoral College could put an anti-voting election denier back in the White House. That's an existential threat to our democracy. Don't believe us? USA Today has the details:

"A recent series of six swing-state presidential polls offered Democrats and President Joe Biden a welcome dose of optimism. The head-to-head matchup with former President Donald Trump had Biden winning Wisconsin by a point and tied in Michigan and Pennsylvania."

"But the same Bloomberg/Morning Consult poll contained a dire warning. When minor party candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Jill Stein and Cornel West were added to the mix, Biden’s narrow lead in Wisconsin became a 2-point loss, a tie in Pennsylvania flipped to Trump by 6 points and Michigan remained dead even. Such an outcome would return Trump to the White House."

Election experts agree on three points: (1) In a head-to-head general election contest, Trump faces the same challenges to winning the popular vote as he has in the past, perhaps worse; (2) independent third-party candidates on the ballot siphoning away votes gives Trump the best possible chance of winning reelection by winning the Electoral College; and (3) Trump says he will continue to seek reelection even if he is convicted of crimes. We can’t just hope that this threat will go away or that the courts will act in time to remove Trump from the ballot.

But we do have one simple way to checkmate these efforts. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is an agreement among a group of U.S. states and the District of Columbia to award all their electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Minnesota was the latest to join, giving NPVIC 16 states plus DC, accounting for 206 electoral votes and 76% of the states needed to essentially make the popular vote the law of the land. We need to get over the top in the other states considering joining, like Maine and Michigan, to make the popular vote a reality.
