Hi Friend,
From deceptive and fake AI-generated photos of Trump to Elon Musk recently sharing a video with AI-generated audio of Vice President Kamala Harris, there’s no doubt that deepfakes are already posing a serious threat to our shared sense of what is real – as well as to our democracy itself. [1][2][3]
And with November’s elections right around the corner and multiple foreign governments known or suspected to be mounting big disinformation operations to influence voters or people’s trust in election results [4], this threat will only grow in the weeks and months to come.
But the five biggest social media companies can – and must – step up to help curb the dissemination of electoral deepfakes. Sign our petition to the CEOs of the big five social media platforms and tell them: take immediate action to to stop deepfakes from interfering in our elections.
YES, I'LL SIGN
These platforms, with their immense and unprecedented reach and influence, have a responsibility to protect their users – and our democratic form of government – from this dangerous form of digital deception.
Realistic deepfakes are already being weaponized by bad faith actors to spread disinformation, perpetuate sexual abuse, fuel fraud, and erode trust. The urgency of this issue is paramount; with just three months until election day here in the U.S., it’s time for immediate action. Sign our petition today and tell the big social media companies to crack down on electoral deepfakes before it’s too late.
Thank you for speaking out today,
Nicole Gill
