A message from the Leader of the Council, Cllr Neghat Khan

We were all shocked and saddened by the tragic events in Southport on Monday 29 July.

At a meeting of all City Councillors this week, a motion was passed extending a heartfelt message of support from Nottingham to the victims and their families, while condemning the disgraceful criminality and racist hatred that we have seen around the country.

Nottingham is known as a welcoming place where people from different backgrounds live and work alongside each other. Attempts to drive division among our diverse communities will not be tolerated and will never succeed.

I’d also like to pay tribute to Nottinghamshire Police for the way their officers oversaw the gatherings involving hundreds of people in our city last weekend which thankfully did not lead to serious disorder.

In other parts of the country there have been shocking instances of violence, criminal damage and looting – we remain extremely grateful to the police’s ongoing professionalism and bravery. I’d also like to thank our own Community Protection officers who supported the Police last weekend and the Council’s street-cleansing teams for their work afterwards.

Library consultation

Still time to take part in consultation to reshape Library Service

People are being invited to the final public meeting to discuss proposals for the city’s Library Service.

A wider consultation event was launched at the end of May, running until Monday 19 August, which has so far generated more than 3,400 responses from residents and local partner organisations.

We're continuing to urge people to take part in the survey, available both online and in libraries. It’s crucial to gather a wide range of voices, opinions and experiences to accurately reflect the thoughts of everyone who lives, works or studies in Nottingham.

A final public meeting is being held at Nottingham’s Council House, in Old Market Square, on Thursday 15 August from 2pm to 4pm. There will be an opportunity to:

* Understand more about the savings needing to be found within the Library Service and why these are necessary
* Ask questions directly to the Leader of the Council, Councillor Neghat Khan, and the Executive Member for Carbon Reduction, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Sam Lux
* Share thoughts and ideas
