### **The Squad Faces Another Loss**

In a striking political upset, Missouri's staunchly Democratic 1st Congressional District delivered a decisive blow to the far-left faction of the party, as incumbent Rep. Cori Bush, a prominent member of the "Squad," was defeated in the primary by St. Louis County prosecutor Wesley Bell. Bell, who represents a more centrist approach, received significant support from pro-Israel groups, which invested heavily in the campaign against Bush due to her controversial criticisms of Israel.

Bush's defeat marks her as the second "Squad" member to lose a primary challenge this cycle, following Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York, who was also bested by a moderate Democrat with pro-Israel backing. This trend underscores a growing schism within the Democratic Party, particularly concerning U.S.-Israel relations, which has been especially pronounced since the Hamas terror attack on October 7 of the previous year.

In the aftermath of that attack, Bush was quick to condemn Israel's retaliatory measures against Palestinians, stating, "Israel’s collective punishment against Palestinians for Hamas’ actions is a war crime." This statement, along with her continued alignment with other outspoken critics of Israel, such as Rep. Rashida Tlaib, may have alienated more moderate and pro-Israel Democratic voters.

Adding to her challenges, Bush has been under scrutiny for potential ethical violations. Earlier this year, she disclosed ongoing investigations by the Justice Department, Federal Election Commission, and House Ethics Committee concerning allegations that she improperly used campaign funds for personal security services. In defense, Bush accused "right-wing organizations" of "peddling notions that I have misused campaign funds to pay for personal security services."
