ACLU Supporter, four years ago, George Floyd, a Black man living in Minnesota, was murdered at the hands of a white Minneapolis police officer. Since then, this crisis of police violence has continued to get worse – with police killing more people last year than any previous year on record. So far this year, there have only been 10 days where police did not kill anyone. Only a month ago, police shot and tragically killed Sonya Massey in her own home after she called them for help. Meanwhile, the officers who perpetrate this violence are rarely subject to legal consequences. There is a clear crisis of police violence in this country that disproportionately harms Black and brown people, the LGBTQ community, and people with disabilities. Yet Congress still has not passed any legislation to rein in the often unchecked power of the police. That's why we need to push for action right now and it starts with the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This bill was just reintroduced in the Senate this week and it would meaningfully address systemic racism and hold police accountable. Please, join us now and tell Congress to pass this legislation immediately.
ACLU Supporter, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is a strong federal bill that would prevent officers from evading accountability for misconduct and violence, stop the Pentagon from sending tools of war to police departments across the country, and meaningfully rein in racial profiling and police brutality. Despite bipartisan support in the House when it was first introduced in 2021, the Senate has refused to hold a vote on this bill for over three years. We need to let them know that this is unacceptable. This is our chance to address in police violence and create real accountability in policing: We desperately need the kinds of structural change this bill would bring – tell your representatives to pass the George Floyd Justice in Police Act immediately.
