Cori Bush, D-Mo., a third term in office. The primary saw Bush, a prominent member of the progressive "Squad," lose to St. Louis County prosecutor Wesley Bell, a candidate whose moderate stance garnered significant support from pro-Israel groups. These groups invested heavily in the campaign, motivated by Bush's critical stance on Israel.
Bush's defeat marks her as the second "Squad" member to lose a primary challenge this cycle, following Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., who was also defeated by a moderate Democrat with pro-Israel backing. This trend underscores a growing schism within the Democratic Party concerning the U.S.'s longstanding alliance with Israel, a topic that has gained heightened visibility following the Hamas terror attack on October 7 of the previous year.
In the aftermath of the attack, Bush controversially stated, "Israel’s collective punishment against Palestinians for Hamas’ actions is a war crime." This comment and her general critique of Israeli policies have been central to the opposition she faced from pro-Israel factions within her party.
Despite the warning signs from Bowman’s earlier primary loss, Bush doubled down on her progressive credentials. On the eve of the election, she held a virtual rally featuring other notable progressives, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., a known critic of Israel. This move seemed to solidify her appeal to her base while alienating moderate and pro-Israel Democratic voters.
