WG Economy: Most Important Reason To Reduce The Debt

The national debt has recently crossed the $35 trillion mark. In our latest survey for Winning the Issues (July 23-25, 1,000 registered voters), we took a fresh look at the question what is the most important reason to reduce our national debt?

In March of 2023, the top reason was to lower inflation and the rising cost of goods in America (32%), which came in ahead of other reasons like lessening our dependence on foreign nations like China (23%), ensuring our children aren't saddled with debt (21%), and strengthening programs for the next generation (17%). Inflation was also the most important reason across party. While all four reasons may have been seen as important to some degree, inflation was clearly the most important reason.

Data from our July survey shows that inflation has only increased in imporance as the main reason to reduce the debt. Now nearly one in two, 47%, say that lowering inflation is the most important reason to reduce our national debt. This perception is true across party, with lowering inflation as the clear top reason among Republicans, independents and Democrats.

From our latest survey for Winning the Issues (July 23-25), we took a look at how voters perceive the ideology of Kamala Harris, Donald Trump, and other political figures. We asked voters to rate themselves and other political figures on a scale of 1-9 with 1 being very liberal, 5 moderate, and 9 very conservative. Like we have seen in past research, the electorate is center-right, putting themselves at a 5.43.
