Today marks one year since the tragic wildfires in Hawaii swept and destroyed over 80% of the buildings in the town of Lahaina, Maui, leaving over 2,700 homes rendered uninhabitable.1 This historic disaster is just one of many in a pattern that has become increasingly dangerous. Just last year, more than 2.6 MILLION acres of land were damaged due to wildfires, decimating vital forest area that is essential to the health of many global ecosystems.2
Here at EARTHDAY.ORG, it is our goal to help restore not only the habitats affected by forest fires, but also to support the local economies that rely on its natural resources to succeed. Because of your support this past year, we planted trees all over the world in locations in dire need of support including over 100,000 mangrove saplings along shorelines in Bangladesh to enhance flood protection and allow for easier ship transport, while also providing refuge for local crab and shrimp populations.3

A current example of our work to fight the impacts of wildfires is visible at our site in Brazil, one of the most vulnerable areas in the world to fire damage. Ongoing fires in Brazil’s Pantanal wetland have been at record heights this June, and they threaten to obliterate the largest tropical wetland on our planet.4 It’s up to us to minimize the damage done and support nearby ecosystems, and we plan to do that by continuing our reforestation efforts to keep nearby rainforest canopy healthy.
