Dear John,
Afshana Farooq, a 14-year-old who was nearly trampled in a stampede when Indian forces opened fire on demonstrators, in a hospital in Srinagar, Kashmir. “We were just marching peacefully after prayers,” her father said. “Then they started shooting at us.” - Atul Loke for The New York Times.
KASHMIR CRISIS - Call to Action
Emgage is calling you to ACT now before it is too late. As the Kashmir crisis deteriorates, we must ensure that America stands on the right side of history - defending those facing tyranny.
Since the fall of the British Raj and subsequent partition of India, the highly contested region of Kashmir has been the battleground for multiple Indo-Pak wars and an ongoing ‘cold war’ between India and Pakistan. Experts claim Kashmir to be one of the most militarized regions on the planet - with 45% being administered by India, 35% by Pakistan, and 20% by China. The Indian Constitution, under Article 370, provided a guarantee for the ‘Indian Administered’ portion of Kashmir to remain autonomous - allowing Kashmiris a separate constitution, flag, autonomy over all internal administration and affairs, and identity. In a highly controversial move however, considered by many to be illegal and unconstitutional, Indian President Kovind - under the Hindu-Nationalist Modi Government - issued a constitutional order to revoke Article 370, on 5th August, 2019.
The Modi Government has at last taken the grave step to undermine the Muslim-majority identity of the people of Kashmir. They are setting the stage for heightened conflict - with Kashmiri political leaders and activists being detained or under house arrest, banned public meetings, an internet and communications blackout, and thousands of Indian soldiers being deployed to the region. We need you to contact Congress, via the link below, and urge your Representative to speak out against these provocations that could easily lead to bloodshed and human rights violations.
“The Modi Government’s unilateral move undermines the fundamental rights of Kashmiris to live in peace and their rights protected. India cannot claim to be both the world's largest democracy and a country that violently strips people of their right to self determination. A true democracy does not arbitrarily change a constitution, blocks all forms of communication, deploys thousands of troops, and falsely claims that the population is happy with these actions." - Wa’el Alzayat, CEO Emgage.
