A new United Nations report, Press and Planet in Danger, highlights what a “perilous field” environmental journalism has become. Around the world, environmental journalists are maligned, threatened, or worse, at a time when our work is essential. In the face of such threats, we need your support. As the report notes, over 300 attacks occurred in just the past five years — a huge, 42 percent increase from the preceding five-year period. Another 44 journalists have been killed in 15 countries, and at least 24 survived murder attempts. Our small, but scrappy, publication has never shied away from exposing the abuses of the powerful and celebrating the power of individuals to make a difference in a world increasingly controlled by multinational corporations and undemocratic institutions. At a time when newsrooms across the country are shutting down, when big media corporations continue to put profit ahead of people, and Big Tech algorithms and artificial intelligence distort the incentives for producing quality journalism, the Journal is able to continue with its dogged investigations into corporations, government agencies, and other actors who pose a threat to our living planet, thanks to its strong community of readers and supporters like you.
