President's Message

Advocacy has been and will continue to be a primary focus of NASN and mine as President and a school nurse, whether it be for our students, our families, school nursing as a whole, or for each of us as individual school nurses.

I'm thrilled to share that NASN President-Elect Lynn Nelson and I recently had the honor of being guests on The How We Teach This Podcast, produced by The Teachers College at Emporia State University, titled Nurses Support Teaching & Learning. This platform allowed us to engage in a meaningful conversation about the critical role of school nurses in creating a safe and healthy learning environment.

By leveraging our collective and individual voices, we can effectively advocate for quality systems-level school health services for all students. This collaborative effort can help us secure strategic partnerships to pursue upstream changes that enhance student health, safety, and education.

Kate King, DNP, MS, RN, LSN

Managing Chronic Health Conditions

Addressing Chronic Absenteeism with Data

NASN believes that school attendance is essential to student learning and success. When school nurses have access to accurate, up-to-date, and consistent attendance data, they can identify and address absences related to health issues. NASN's Data Initiative, the National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts! (ESC!), is designed to encourage a robust national school health data set that will:

  • Influence local, state, and national student health policy.
  • Identify best practices in school health.
  • Enhance understanding of child health.

This NASN School Nurse article provides an overview of the ESC! Data Initiative for the 2023–2024 school year: NASN membership includes a subscription to NASN School Nurse.
