Local Races Matter 💲
Hey, John. With all the exciting news over the past couple of weeks, the public is understandably laser-focused on the presidential race. And while we must elect the Harris-Walz ticket, many of the most impactful battles in the climate fight are flying under the radar — state and local elections.
State legislatures, city councils, county supervisors, and public utility boards have immense power to shape policies that not only impact our climate but directly affect the health and well-being of millions of people across the country. At JanePAC, we invest so heavily in down-ballot races because that is where the need for climate action is most immediate and where your investment in our work can have the greatest impact on the outcome of the election.
Candidates in local elections often spend a LOT less on their campaigns than federal or statewide candidates. That means that a small donation really could make all the difference in electing a climate champion to a county board or city council. The bottom line is this: investing in these races is effective and efficient. Donate just $3 today to support JanePAC’s slate of state and local climate candidates >>>
Our Recent Victories 🎉
- In Arizona, we pulled off an incredible clean sweep in the July 30 Primary! All 11 of our JanePAC-endorsed candidates for the state legislature are now advancing to the general election in November. If they win, we can help create a pro-climate majority in a state where the climate crisis is already doing considerable damage. Earlier this year, we also helped elect three climate champions to the Salt River Project Board, positioning them to push for sustainable energy practices. And let’s not forget Jen Allen’s victory in the Pima County Board of Supervisors primary race! Jen will help usher in a just clean energy transition for Southern Arizona.
- In Michigan, we scored another clean sweep this week with our four endorsed climate champions for the state legislature winning their primary races! With razor-thin majorities in both chambers, these victories are crucial to maintaining recent progress on clean energy, environmental reforms, and protecting communities from the impacts of fossil fuel pollution. Our champions will continue to lead the way in climate policy, benefiting not just Michigan but the entire nation.
- In Colorado, our endorsed candidates Junie Joseph (State House District 10) and Elliott Hood (CU Regent At-Large) advanced in their primary races in June! They are ready to protect Colorado’s natural beauty and fight against the fossil fuel industry's harmful practices.
- In Texas, we made history when our endorsed candidate Molly Cook won the special election for District 15, making her the first openly LGBTQ+ member to serve in the Texas State Senate.
- In California, Igor Tregub won his race for Berkeley City Council, running on a platform to make Berkeley the nation’s climate leader. Several of our endorsed climate champions also came out on top in the California primary earlier this year, including five running for the state legislature and Laura Friedman, who triumphed in a 15-way primary to succeed Adam Schiff in Congress!
