| As Election Nears, Aging Policy is on the Move |

August has arrived and the general election is around the corner. With members of Congress home on recess through Sept. 9, we’re here to share updates on aging policy, so you can help protect and promote programs we all depend on as we age.
August is your time to act. Let’s dive in. |

Reauthorizing and Strengthening the
Older Americans Act (OAA) |
|
|
Our attention is heavily focused on the OAA, a cornerstone law that supports older adults and their families. The OAA up for reauthorization—that’s inside-the-Beltway speak for renewal—but as our recent article points out, there are more steps ahead to get it across the finish line.
Since 1965, the OAA has made it possible for older adults to live independently in their communities. It funds home-delivered meals, caregiver support, healthy aging programs, employment opportunities, and more. Earlier this year, NCOA President and CEO Ramsey Alwin testified on the importance of the OAA.
A Senate committee approved the Older Americans Act Reauthorization Act of 2024 (S. 4776), but the bill still needs full Senate approval and consideration by the House. NCOA has endorsed this legislation, and we're urging Congress to pass it swiftly. |

Protect Funding for Aging Services |
|
|
Meanwhile, Congress still needs to pass funding for aging services for the new fiscal year. The Senate Appropriations Committee recently passed a group of annual funding bills, but there are stark differences between those and similar bills on the House side. The Senate versions would maintain or increase investments in aging services programs, while the House wants to cut or even eliminate some of them. At risk are the Senior Community Service Employment Program, falls prevention programs, and meals programs. We're focusing on protecting—and boosting funding for—these programs. 11,000 Americans are turning 65 every day. Now is not the time for cuts. |

August is a great time to advocate on behalf of these critical programs. During the summer recess, members of Congress are spending time in their home districts—and they’re listening to constituents like you.
Look up your members online and see when they will be in your area. Visit their district office or try to attend an event! If you’re an aging services professional, invite lawmakers and candidates to visit your organization. You can educate them while showcasing what you do for the community.

Final Thoughts
A Treat and Reduce Obesity Act by any other name...
Under discussion in Congress is a narrower bill that would address Medicare coverage of anti-obesity medications, nutrition counseling, and behavioral therapy. This is something we were focused on heavily in 2024, so stay tuned for updates.
