In our discussion, we talked about how historically, Groundwork’s target regions have lacked the sustained investment that national groups reserve for what they consider political “battlegrounds” — despite the fact that all of our states hold outsized influence in the fight to protect democracy itself!

We discussed why I founded Groundwork Project: To upend that status quo and support local democracy and social justice organizers building power across the Deep South, Appalachia, and the Plains.

And I emphasized how our partners are on the frontlines of our democracy’s most crucial battles — like the Mississippi Workers' Center for Human Rights, which for 25 years has been the driving force fighting for workers’ dignity and safety across the Delta. Or Freedom Oklahoma, fiercely advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in a state where they are often under the harshest attacks.

Our partners’ work doesn’t just impact the daily lives of folks living in their communities – it is often the glue holding our whole democracy together in the places it is most at risk.
