Dear friend, Prolonged drought. Shorter winters. Heavy rainfall and flooding. Intensifying hurricanes and typhoons. The impacts of climate change continue to worsen around the world — posing existential challenges for communities that rely on farming and agriculture. Mercy Corps teams work tirelessly to support families and help communities cope with the effects of climate change. That work includes improving access to water for agriculture and everyday needs in susceptible communities. Today, we share the story of Mahmoud Hebahbeh, a 77-year-old farmer from Jordan, who explains the difference Mercy Corps has made in his life. The lack of water in his village meant that Mahoud’s farm wasn’t yielding enough crops to sell in the market, decreasing his income from agricultural sales. It also meant that he had to buy more food at the market, increasing his expenses. With the help of Mercy Corps teams, Mahmoud received grants to rehabilitate his water pump addressing the impact of climate change on his farm. He also received support in developing recovery responses and technical training to improve their livelihoods.
When asked about climate change, Mahmoud says that water is a larger issue than simply restoring the pump — he’s concerned that climate change will further challenge the village’s ability to thrive. He understands that the issue goes beyond individual capabilities.
Sincerely, Mercy Corps |
