Dear friend,

Prolonged drought. Shorter winters. Heavy rainfall and flooding. Intensifying hurricanes and typhoons. The impacts of climate change continue to worsen around the world — posing existential challenges for communities that rely on farming and agriculture.

Mercy Corps teams work tirelessly to support families and help communities cope with the effects of climate change. That work includes improving access to water for agriculture and everyday needs in susceptible communities.

Today, we share the story of Mahmoud Hebahbeh, a 77-year-old farmer from Jordan, who explains the difference Mercy Corps has made in his life.

"Adequate and timely rainfall plays a crucial role in determining the quality and quantity of our crops," says Mahmoud. Climate change is causing weather to become less predictable, threatening his livelihood.

Mahmoud lives in the village of Al Zubareiya, where he witnessed the drastic changes in weather patterns, insufficient rainfall, and inadequate crops. More specifically, the well in his village started to provide less and less water, impacting crops in the community and the quality of life.

The lack of water in his village meant that Mahoud’s farm wasn’t yielding enough crops to sell in the market, decreasing his income from agricultural sales. It also meant that he had to buy more food at the market, increasing his expenses.

With the help of Mercy Corps teams, Mahmoud received grants to rehabilitate his water pump addressing the impact of climate change on his farm. He also received support in developing recovery responses and technical training to improve their livelihoods.

Mahmoud reports that the impact of Mercy Corps’ water pump has been life-changing: "The water pump station is the lifeline of our village, supplying water to all its inhabitants."

Today, with the water pump back working, Mahmoud is able to comfortably look after his farm and provide food for his family.

When asked about climate change, Mahmoud says that water is a larger issue than simply restoring the pump — he’s concerned that climate change will further challenge the village’s ability to thrive. He understands that the issue goes beyond individual capabilities.

"Climate change is a global challenge that requires collective action and efforts on a larger scale."

Climate change needs all of us to take action in order to combat its effects. Let us know if you agree!
I agree!
With support from people like you, Mercy Corps partners with many organizations and communities to support families impacted by climate changes. Thank you for being part of our community.

Sincerely,

Mercy Corps
