Notification of Potential Weather Event For the District – Secure Construction Sites and Properties To Ensure Safety

*The DC Department of Buildings (DOB) *is notifying all residents and businesses of a potentially severe weather event in the District. As a result of Tropical Storm Debby, the National Weather Service [ [link removed] ] (NWS) is calling for *severe rain today, August 8, 2023, through Friday night, August 9, 2024,* that has the potential to bring heavy levels of precipitation and potentially damaging flooding conditions. There is also a slight chance of heavy winds and tornadoes in the region.

A prolonged period of moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over a 24-36-hour period starting later Thursday night into Friday. The NWS states that 1.5 to 4 inches of rain are possible in certain areas. All properties within the District should be prepared for sustained high winds and water. There is potential not only for considerable flash flooding of creeks, small streams, and urban areas, but also downed trees and power lines, which could induce power outages.

*Residents and businesses must secure their construction sites. *Wind-blown debris from construction sites can be a hazard to people as well as property. Extra safeguards to prevent any equipment, materials, or debris from being dislodged from worksites should be taken.

Fences, signs, equipment, and materials (including porta johns and roll-off debris containers) should be secured at all construction sites. Additionally, property owners and managers should also secure any loose objects that are unsafe to bring inside, and should bring objects indoors that could become airborne in high winds, e.g., patio furniture, garbage cans, rooftop planters, and other items.
