Tim Walz, the second-term Minnesota governor with a folksy demeanor, has gained a spot on the Democratic ticket as Kamala Harris’ vice presidential choice.

The former high school geography teacher and National Guard veteran helped green-light a slate of progressive policy priorities in Minnesota.

“As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he's delivered for working families like his," Harris wrote in a statement. "We are going to build a great partnership."

Harris picked Walz for his executive experience and leadership on issues that the campaign also hopes to focus on, including child tax credits, gun safety and abortion rights, according to sources close to the campaign who were not authorized to discuss the decision publicly. They also pointed to his Midwest background, which could help appeal to key voters, and ability to be an effective messenger against the Trump-Vance ticket.

The selection of Gov. Tim Walz as a Democratic vice presidential candidate could trigger a cascade of political leadership changes in Minnesota — if the newly minted ticket wins. But it’s important to note at the outset that the timing of any Walz departure from the Minnesota governor’s office would dictate everything.

Roughly 7% of women of reproductive age in the US have attempted to induce their own abortions outside the formal healthcare system, a new study has found, up from 5% before Roe v Wade fell in 2022.

The study, published on Tuesday in the Jama medical journal, determined how many people reported ever “self-managing” their own abortion in 2021 and again in 2023 – a timeline that allowed researchers to examine how Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the supreme court case that overturned Roe, has affected self-managed abortions. People of color and LGBTQ+ people were more likely to report having ever attempted to end their own pregnancies.

“We think because it’s getting more difficult to access facility-based abortion, that self-managed abortion will increase,” said Lauren Ralph, the study’s lead author and an epidemiologist at Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health, a research group at the University of California, San Francisco. “It’s a really important piece of the puzzle, as we try to understand the full impact of the Dobbs decision on people’s reproductive lives.”
