Friend,
While my team and I have been reaching out all week about the August 6th primary election and how big of a moment this is for our race, I wanted to take a moment to explain to you how our campaign specifically changes now that we’re in the general election.
Since we launched in February 2023, we have been running a strategic and thoughtful campaign that builds towards a three month stretch — from August 7th until November 5th.
Everything that we have done up until now has been about methodically building a runway: traveling across the state to meet voters, airing TV and digital ads, recruiting volunteers to do that crucial direct voter contact, and raising money to fund all of that.
It’s August 8. The runway is built. Now we have to fly the plane.
As a part of our methodical planning over the last 18 months, we have built a budget that reflects what we believe to be a winning campaign in the swingiest of swing states. Within that budget, we have built out projections — educated estimates about how much money we need and expect to raise for each month, week, and even day of the general election.
Here is where we stand on that right now: Every dollar that we have raised so far has been allocated. But so has the money we haven’t raised yet.
That means that anytime we dip below our weekly and monthly projections, we have to make difficult decisions. It would mean cutting crucial expenditures, like TV ads and voter contact operations. The bottom line is that every dollar we do not raise results in us reaching fewer voters.
With everything going on in politics right now, this is not just about our race for the U.S. Senate — although I’m confident we can win if we have the resources. It’s also about what our performance means for the rest of the ticket.
So for every voter that our campaign does not reach, there is one fewer touch point for Democrats at large. After the presidential election at the top of the ticket, I am next to the top of the ticket and I take that responsibility to other candidates on the ballot very seriously. Our gain is their gain, and our loss is their loss.
So that is where we stand as of today, August 8. We have done everything that we can to prepare for this moment, but preparation alone will not win us this election. We will win on the strength of our operation over the final 89 days.
