John,

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and reaffirm my commitment to our city as your current Philadelphia City Council President.

# [#]Service Always
The first thing you should know about me? I was raised with a strong sense of community and a commitment to helping others that sparked my desire to improve the quality of life for all Philadelphians — that is why public service is at the heart of everything we do.

The first time I thought about using that drive to serve my community through politics was at Mansfield University. After taking a transformative political science class, I decided to get involved in our student government, eventually making it to the President of Student Government for all Pennsylvania schools — from then on out, I was hooked.

# [#]The Streets of Philly
I tried my hand working in a bank — and while I appreciate the profession — I learned pretty quickly that my calling was serving, organizing, and connecting with my community on the streets of Philly. I’ve worked at summer camps in the city. I’ve served in AmeriCorps through the City Year program. When I decided to run for office, one of my proudest accomplishments was the holes in my sneakers from knocking every single door in my district — twice.

Almost every election I’ve won has been a tough-fought grassroots campaign against well-funded billionaire candidates. But despite the odds, I’ve always believed in the power of community, grassroots support, and the importance of working together to create positive change.

Even now at City Hall, I spend more time on the streets of Philly than in City Hall. And I encourage my fellow Councilmembers to come with me every chance I get.

# [#]Priorities for the City
After the loss of my cousin to gun violence in 1998, I founded Peace Not Guns. I’ve seen firsthand the devastation that gun violence can cause — that’s why I’ve been a steadfast advocate for putting an end to gun violence and creating a safer environment for everyone in our city.

And while gun violence is a priority of mine in City Hall, so is tackling poverty (a root cause of gun violence), food security, affordable housing, jobs and workforce development, academic achievement and healthcare. So many of our issues are intertwined and so are the solutions.

# [#]Family
I’m a dad and husband first. My wife Dawn and I have two amazing sons, Isaiah and Elijah. Most days you can find me taking them to YMCA basketball, Monarchs baseball and soccer games, camp, or going on a family bike ride and hitting the Schuylkill River Trail.

And we love getting to know all of YOU: our neighbors, our fellow Philadelphians, our community.

What else do you want to know about me, John? And what should I know about you? [[link removed]]
