In August 2020, a massive prodemocracy movement spread through Belarus, ignited by the reelection of longtime president Alyaksandr Lukashenka in a fraudulent presidential poll. Peaceful protesters faced indiscriminate violence and arbitrary arrests, and many detainees have since been subjected to torture and other forms of violence while in custody.
Four years later, nearly 1,400 political prisoners remain incarcerated. Following a recent prisoner release, human rights defender and former political prisoner Leanid Sudalenka offers his thoughts on political imprisonment in Belarus.
