Tomorrow is the UN Day of Indigenous Peoples, and this year’s theme is uncontacted tribes. There could hardly be a more urgent cause.

As the industrialized world reaches into every corner of the Earth, peoples who until now had managed to live in relative peace are seeing their lands invaded and resources stolen, while epidemics of new diseases threaten to completely wipe them out.

On the Indonesian island of Halmahera, home to hundreds of uncontacted Hongana Manyawa people, bird song and animal cries are being replaced by the roar of bulldozers and mining trucks.

Why?

To produce nickel for electric car batteries – a bitter irony, given that the Hongana Manyawa have done nothing to cause climate change. They are being sacrificed to fight it.

Or take Great Nicobar Island; for thousands of years a peaceful corner of the Indian Ocean, and home to one of the most isolated tribes on Earth, the Shompen. They have no knowledge that the Indian government intends to transform the island into “the Hong Kong of India”, with a mega-port, military base, power station, and new city of 650,000 people.

Or the Peruvian Amazon, home of probably the largest uncontacted tribe on Earth, the Mashco Piro.

We released extraordinary images
a few weeks ago proving that more than 100 of them live in a part of
their territory which the government has sold off for logging concessions.

There too, bulldozers and
chainsaws replace the sounds
of the forest, while precious timber
is hauled away.

These disparate peoples have one thing in common – They face a desperately unequal struggle in the fight for their lands and lives. Up against hugely powerful corporations and governments, they need you on their side if they are to survive.
