John,
While we may have lost our fight to re-elect Rep. Cori Bush in Missouri’s 1st congressional district, another Justice Democrat won their primary yesterday: Rep. Rashida Tlaib in Michigan’s 12th district.
As an unapologetic progressive and the only Palestinian member of Congress, Rashida has courageously stood up for the human rights of all people, including being one of the first to call for a ceasefire and the release of all hostages in Gaza.
But Rashida was quickly targeted with racist, Islamophobic attacks from Republicans and even some of her colleagues in the Democratic Party last fall, with Congress formally voting to censure her.
At the same time, AIPAC launched online ads attacking Rashida and announced they were planning to spend upward of $100 million to unseat her and the rest of the Squad this cycle. But Rashida never stopped fighting, and when it came time for the primary, AIPAC backed off, failing to recruit a challenger and spending $0 in her race.
Not only did Rashida organize AIPAC out of her district, but she also backed her colleagues Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, helping them fight AIPAC in their highly contested races.
It goes to show that the tide is turning against AIPAC and its pro-war, anti-Palestinian stances. A vocal majority supports our progressive movement, the values we stand for, and leaders like Rashida who truly fight for the people.
And even when AIPAC and its right-wing megadonors do come for us, we’re not backing down. Through grassroots support from people like you, we will continue to do everything in our power to out-organize our opponents and build the bloc of young, diverse, working-class progressives in Congress our communities deserve.
In solidarity,
Alexandra Rojas
