As the new school year approaches, we at The Trevor Project are committed to ensuring LGBTQ+ young people feel supported, safe, and accepted in their school environments. We’re here to provide you with resources and tips to help create a welcoming atmosphere for all students.
** Creating a Supportive Environment
------------------------------------------------------------
Returning to school can be both exciting and challenging, especially for LGBTQ+ young people. Here are some ways you can help make their transition smoother:
* Use Inclusive Language: Words matter. Ensure that your language is inclusive and respectful of all identities. Using correct pronouns and gender-neutral terms ([link removed](i.e.e-newsletter)&utm_source=emailsegment-wholefile1&utm_campaign=back-to-school) can make a significant difference in making students feel seen and valued.
* Recognize Signs of Distress: Be vigilant about recognizing signs of distress ([link removed](i.e.e-newsletter)&utm_source=emailsegment-wholefile1&utm_campaign=back-to-school) among students. Anxiety, withdrawal, or changes in behavior can indicate that a student is struggling. Early intervention can provide the support they need. Remember, The Trevor Project is always available with 24/7 crisis services ([link removed](i.e.e-newsletter)&utm_source=emailsegment-wholefile1&utm_campaign=back-to-school) for those who may need it.
* Foster Allyship: Encourage allyship ([link removed](i.e.e-newsletter)&utm_source=emailsegment-wholefile1&utm_campaign=back-to-school) among students and supportive adults. Allies can play a crucial role in creating a supportive school culture. Promote programs and activities that teach community, empathy and understanding.
