Lateefah Simon was born and raised in our district in the Western Addition and is a 25-year veteran organizer and advocate for civil rights. She worked for then District Attorney Kamala Harris, is currently serving as a transit leader on the BART Board of Directors, and is Congresswoman Barbara Lee's pick to replace her as the next representative of the 12th Congressional District.

Vallie Brown is the former District 5 Supervisor, with over a decade of experience serving the district as both a legislative aide and elected representative. Of Paiute and Shoshone descent, she led our district on a platform of constituent services - services that are sorely lacking since her departure.

What do you find to be the most exciting part of this race?

I’m excited to be part of such an important and close race here in District 5. We have the numbers to make real, meaningful change right here in our own neighborhoods!

Why did you choose to get involved with the campaign?

I got involved because 2024 is the most important election year of my lifetime. While we sometimes get caught up in the top of the ballot, it is often our local elected officials who can make the most notable change in our daily lives.

What are your most hopeful for?

I'm hopeful at the prospect of getting someone into City Hall who truly is a member of our community and understands what we're feeling. I'm looking forward to having someone who is out on our streets talking to the neighborhood and working to address our most pressing issues.
