Dear Friends,
July 22, 2024 marked the Earth's hottest day on record, and in this unprecedented time of heat waves, drought, flooding, and extreme weather disturbances, the pressing impact of the climate crisis is undeniable.
Now is the time for Congress to ensure that the top polluting companies are held accountable and required to pay their fair share to cover the costs of addressing the climate crisis, not taxpayers. The climate crisis is an existential threat to the future of our planet, and we must act now to mitigate the devastating impacts we are already seeing in our environment.
Last week we celebrated the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act being signed into law, transformative legislation that has made everyday life easier for Americans living with disabilities.
Since then, we've made so much progress on accessibility—but much work remains, including the 23 subway accessibility projects that have been put on hold due to Governor Kathy Hochul's "indefinite pause" of congestion pricing.
I wholeheartedly support the recent announcement of two lawsuits to implement congestion pricing, and will not rest until we deliver cleaner air, better transit, and safer streets to New York.
It's no secret that New York is facing a housing crisis, and the soaring costs of rent are pricing many of our neighbors out of their communities, particularly our most vulnerable populations.
When completed, The Lirio will reserve housing for formerly homeless long-term survivors of HIV/AIDS. For over 30 years, I've fought for the federal Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program, because stable housing means better health outcomes, bringing us closer to ending the HIV epidemic.
This week, I was proud to join my NY Delegation colleagues in introducing the 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding Correction Act to fix the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) funding shortfall.
While over twenty years have passed since the 9/11 attacks, so many of our heroic responders and survivors continue to carry with them the burden of that terrible day as they have fallen sick from the air surrounding Ground Zero.
Listen to my latest interview on WNYC Radio on why Congress must uphold the promise made to our first responders and survivors by fully funding the WTCHP to provide the injured and their families the aid they need and deserve.
